Derrick Crane
Technical features
The Derrick crane is a machine that, conceptually, hasn’t changed much over the years except for the structure, following the transition from wood to steel. The evolution took place in the increase in capacities (up to 60 t and over) and in the dimensions (70 m in length of the boom), to follow the growing demands of the market. A fundamental phase was then the introduction of safety devices to avoid the possibility of errors by operators.
The Derrick is a lifting device equipped with a “Boom” whose length can range from 5 to 70 m and which can rotate 220 ° and swing from 5 ° to 85 °. It is equipped with a winch unit in which there are three motors that are used for the movement of the boom, the ascent / descent of the hook and the rotation. The other dimensions of the structure depend on the length of the main part (boom) and the capacity.
The evolution in the design and construction of Derrick cranes allows them to be classified in to three categories of machine:
It is characterized by two manual 3-speed mechanical gearboxes, positioned on the winch unit for boom movements, lifting and lowering of the hook respectively, and a motor for rotation of the arm managed by Inverter (to avoid swinging of the load ).
It is characterized by two manual 3-speed mechanical gearboxes positioned on the winch unit for boom movements, and lifting and lowering of the hook. They are equipped with a servomotor which can be operated by radio control to change the speed. The motor of the rotation of the boom managed by Inverter (to avoid swinging of the load).
The three motors positioned on the winch unit are powered by an Inverter. The speed change is carried out electrically by changing the power supply frequency of the motors. This allows to double the working speeds, compared to previous versions, with almost non-existent stresses on the mechanical components and on the steel structure.
- Machine management by “PLC”: the electrical equipment is integrated with a PLC, for speed management according to the position of the boom and the load. This allows to minimize the possible wrong operations by the operator.
- “Disc” type Emergency braking system: which stops the machine in case of over-speed. The rotation speeds of the rope-carrying drums are detected by sensors and the signal sent to the PLC is compared with the programmed one. In case of any deviation from the set values, the machine is blocked avoiding potential problems.
- Possibility of reaching up to 200 m below the crane installation plan
- Sandblasting of the structure
- Winch unit protection cabin
